The discussion about allies in activism, namely bad allies and how to be a good ally, is nothing new, and much has been written about settler allies of Indigenous action in this Idle No More era (see GehlUnsettling America or Morgensen for examples). There is also historical precedent of white allies causing more trouble than they’re worth. In October 1869, the Métis National Committee convened to assert their right to lands at the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and their right to participate in negotiations with the Dominion before land could be surveyed and settler governments installed. Over the course of 1860-1870, the Métis formed a provisional government while they fought and negotiated with the Canadian government over the conditions upon which Manitoba would join Confederation. Among the members of this provisional government was William O’Donoghue, the ally in question.

First New University To Open In Rojava

A new university based on an alternative education model will open in Rojava, according to a report from ANHA carried by Özgür Gündem. The university – the Mesopotamian Social Sciences Academy – will be located in Qamişlo in the Cizîrê Canton of Rojava and begin to hold classes this September.

A First For Rojava

The university will be the first to open since the beginning of the Rojava Revolution. A group of academics including historians, sociologists, legal scholars, political scientists and linguistics decided to open a university following a year of preparatory work. The name was only chosen at the end of June and the decision was taken to use the word ‘academy’ instead of univeristy.

The academy consists of three departments. The first work began around the law department but was soon followed by the sociology and history departments. Today these three departments have 20 faculty members. The director…

Settler colonialism seems to be the least tolerable thing I have every tried to explain (for white settlers that is, Indigenous People’s know and live the reality with or with out the term). Unsettling is the perfect way to describe this work since most white settlers seem to get almost physically sick and extremely enraged over these concepts. There are many demotions to one’s status in settler colonizer society by becoming what I will call, borrowing from Meme, a self-rejecting settler (1). This is a small start in confronting settler privilege. In the big picture, decolonization has far more to offer to the self-rejecting settler than the toxic privilege that they/we embody. Fully gaining their/our humanity, reentering their/our place in the human family, freedom from an alienated, individualist, hierarchical existence, and continued life on this planet to mention a few (2). Imperial Metals Corporation never asked for or received free, prior and informed consent to operate in Secwepemc Territory.  The Imperial Metals Mount Polley mine disaster, in the area known as Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe, the absolute destruction and devastation of our Territory has never been answered for.  No reparations have been made.    Instead Imperial Metals continues to force through another mine in our Territory while criminalizing the Klabona Keepers of the Tahltan Nation also exerting their jurisdictional and withholding consent from the same company.

The Ghost of Bookchin Present: Kurdish Nationhood and Fourth World Decolonization

I don’t even know where to start, other than to say this video is one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a long time.  And that there must have been something Melchizedek new that Abraham never learned….

I have a keen interest in the contrast between so-called “Third World National Liberation” and “Fourth World Decolonization.”  The general narrative of Kurdish history for the past 100 or so years has mostly fallen into a drive for Statist, often Marxian, national liberation.  But, in what has become a deepening of the Left-wing side of their independence movement, there is now a shift to a remarkable non-statist Fourth World Decolonization orientation.  And apparently this is a result of the prison-cell conversion of their main ideologue, Abdullah Öcalan, to the ideas of post-anarchist Murray Bookchin, contrasting their once stringent adherence to Marxist-Leninism of a modified-Maoist bent.

The theoretical, and quite literal, cross-polination of Bookchin’s ideas and Bioregionalism are so strong that I have trouble telling the difference between the two often, apart from pointing out Bookchin’s hostility to most things “spiritual.”  Bookchin was often published in the Bioregional press, and was always a hot topic in the “green anarchist” community here in Cascadia.  So I’ll admit to being rather wide-eye when seeing the theories and practices coming out of Kurdistan at present.

Most Cascadian bioregionalists are always having to explain “No, we don’t want to create a State,” which is sometimes too-far out of the box for most people trying to understand an independence movement.  And of course, my own Bioregionalist ideas draw heavily from decolonial theory and the “Fourth World-ist” movements for non-Statist Indigenous Nationhood that I see intersecting with Bioregionalism here in Cascadia.

Well now I think we have a serious outside point of reference!

The pluralistic, plurinational, non-Statist, ecology based Kurdish “Democratic Autonomy” movement espouses ideas so similar to my take on Cascadian Bioregionalism that I’m going to have to write something much more in-depth soon (taking into account the privileged, racialized monster that is first-world settler colonialism).  But for now, watch this video again!!

As settlers in the Americas, we must bare some of the burden of decolonizing these lands, because the guilty parties in the genocide of American Indians over the past five centuries are not just the direct descendants of Indian-killers like Cortez, Custer, and Columbus. Decolonization is the responsibility of everyone alive today who lives on stolen lands, and as Jewish-Americans, we are not exempt.

bioregional collective? a cascadian view on scottland

A lovely film on the Scottish independence campaign.  I’ve said it before, but Cascadians really need to be paying attention to this.  We each find ourselves in remarkably different contexts, but there is something about the spirit of “we can do it better ourselves” that permeates both movements.

No matter the vote on September 18, Cascadians would do well to notice the hopeful, creative, non-sectarian strategy the YES campaign has embraced.  I’m very curious about other Cascadian views on this film, and the YES campaign in general.  Please do leave thoughtful comments and responses to the film below.

I think a lot of folks were expecting a film exactly like this one when we released Occupied Cascadia, but were a wee bit disappointed when they instead saw a 2 hour philosophical exposition.  I think there is room for an objective look at the Cascadian bioregional movement before too long, and this film inspires me to help make that happen eventually.
